Holiday Fun for Kids & Their Grown-Ups

Thanksgiving break is a great time to do crafts, spend time outside or do things together as a family. 
Here are a few ideas to help get you started.

Nature Walk & Leaf Art

Go on a nature walk with your child and collect leaves for an easy art project to inspire curiosity about colors, textures and shapes. You only need paper, crayons and tape to get started.

Thanksgiving is a time for sharing delicious food and thankful thoughts with family and friends. Add a special decoration to your Thanksgiving table by making fall leaf napkin rings. This easy project uses just a few supplies and looks great on your table.

7 More Leaf Crafts

Using items from around your house, make a beautiful fall-inspired bookmark or a colorful fall wreath. Collect leaves from outside to make your own fall tree using cardboard and some glue. Any leftover leaves can be used for making a turkey or pumpkin.

Enjoy Nature with All of Your Senses

Want to get outside? While running around and being loud are some of the best ways to have fun outside, you can also help your child tune into their senses in the natural world. This allows them the freedom to engage in creative, unstructured outdoor play.

Observing Fall Landscapes

Landscapes are a great way to help children visually understand seasonal changes. In this activity, your child can explore different fall colors by creating their own artwork.

The Leaf Game

This activity helps kids identify different colored leaves and then use them for an art project or game. Watch Daniel Tiger as he gathers leaves and turns it into a color game. 

Big Pond Pumpkin Patch

Big Pond Pumpkin Patch

Physical changes can occur to different materials caused by changes in temperature. Help children understand how heat can affect different foods and cause them to change. In this hands-on activity, children can explore pumpkin parts and observe how heat causes it to change when it is being cooked.

Learn how to make a bird feeder with Durham teacher Ms. Dickerson. This engaging hands-on activity will feed the birds and your child’s love of crafting with food.

Explore Shapes in Nature

Hunting for shapes outside is another activity to do with your child, and it doesn’t require any supplies. Listen to New Bern teacher Mr. Nesbit share what you can look for right outside your front door.

Birdwatching in Cities

There are opportunities to enjoy nature even when you live in the middle of the city. In this clip from Cyber Chase, watch Jaden and Bianca go birdwatching, and help your child learn about the importance of protecting wildlife habitats in cities.
