PBS NORTH CAROLINA ANNOUNCES SEASON 9 OF ‘MY HOME, NC’ TO PREMIERE MAY 2
The Emmy Award-winning series celebrates the inspiring people, places and culture of North Carolina.
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, 5/2/2024 — PBS North Carolina announces season nine of the Emmy Award-winning documentary series My Home, NC. Hosted by PBS North Carolina’s Heather Burgiss, the new season will debut eight episodes starting Thursday, May 2, at 8 PM, on PBS NC and the free PBS App. In addition, new digital shorts from the series will be released on YouTube.
My Home, NC celebrates the people, places, music, food and cultures that make North Carolina so special. Each episode shares unique, fascinating and often under-told stories from the mountains to the coast.
On the season premiere on May 2, My Home, NC ventures into the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains for an unprecedented look at this beloved area. Stories include a visit to the Bluffs, an iconic eatery that has served its famous fried chicken since 1949, and a profile of singer-songwriter and guitarist Frank Hurricane.
Additional guests this season include James Beard Award-winning chef Ricky Moore, the creators of the popular true-crime podcast Criminal, Cherokee artist Luke Swimmer of Buffalotown Clothing, Carolina Hurricanes therapy pig Hamilton and Durham Bulls bat dog Ripken.
“My Home, NC brings viewers face-to-face with the rich tapestry that makes North Carolina such an amazing place,” says Heather Burgiss, the show’sexecutive producer/director/host and PBS North Carolina’s Director of Original Productions. “This season, we’ve pushed the boundaries further than ever before with new, dynamic locations and vibrant personalities who bring fresh perspectives. Each episode aims to captivate and inspire, making this season truly special.”
In February, My Home, NC was recognized with three awards at the 38th Midsouth Regional Emmys: Best Magazine Program, Best Art & Entertainment and Best Editor, Short-Form Content (Rebecca Ward).

Episode 1: Just Down the Road
Premieres Thursday, May 2, 8 PM
Visit an iconic Blue Ridge Parkway eatery, and enjoy the mountain-music sounds of Frank Hurricane. Plus, meet the “Mayor of East Market Street,” John Mitchell of Mitchell’s Clothing in Greensboro.
Episode 2: An Audience with the King: Richard Petty
Premieres Thursday, May 9, 8 PM
Host Heather Burgiss pays a visit to NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty at the Petty Museum and his homeplace in Level Cross, North Carolina. Petty shares stories from his life in the fast lane and all the reasons he loves his NC home, including family, racing, fans and his favorite comfort foods and traditions.
Episode 3: Hands & Heart
Premieres Thursday, May 16, 8 PM
Meet NC creators who inspire and uplift their communities, including puppeteer Tarish Pipkins (aka Jeghetto), Cherokee artist Luke Swimmer of Buffalotown Clothing and artist/poet Quentin Talley of the Soul Providers.
Episode 4: Amazing Animals
Premieres Thursday, May 23, 8 PM
Meet talented critters who delight people with their skills and charm, including Carolina Hurricanes therapy pig Hamilton and Durham Bulls bat dog Ripken.
Episode 5: It’s the Food Show, Y’all
Premieres Thursday, May 30, 8 PM
Head to the coast, where James Beard Award-winning chef Ricky Moore shares his passion for sourcing NC seafood. Then pay a visit to Asheville to meet chef J Chong, who uses Cantonese dishes to connect culture and community.
Episode 6: Life-Changing Legacies
Premieres Thursday, June 6, 8 PM
Ann Hobgood of Hillsborough shares her winding journey to folk art and her passion for giving found objects a new life. Durham’s Moonbelly Meat Company founder Anna Gibala explains why she took up the family business of butchery and her desire to promote locally made meat products. Plus, the family behind the popular eatery International Delights recounts stories of home.
Episode 7: Creative Fire
Premieres Thursday, June 13, 8 PM
Phoebe Judge and Lauren Spohrer, cocreators of the award-winning podcast Criminal, share how they spark intrigue with their true-crime storytelling, and artists Gabriel Eng-Goetz and Raj Bunnag discuss what drives them to create art that represents culture, understanding and hope.
Episode 8: If You Build It
Premieres Thursday, June 20, 8 PM
See how unique dwellings across the state can feel like home and captivate. Explore North Carolina’s modernist architecture movement and efforts to save modernist homes from demolition. Plus, enjoy a visit to Buddy Melvin’s fantastical treehouse in Roseboro, and get a look inside historic beach cottages where the walls can talk.
