Honoring Those Who Served

This Veterans Day, PBS North Carolina shares inspiring stories of courage, sacrifice and dedication. Join us for the premiere of Salute to Service, a heartfelt Veterans Day celebration with the United States Army Field Band and hosted by Jon Stewart, Friday, 11/8 at 9 PM on PBS NC

We honor and celebrate veterans with remarkable stories of resilience and service through compelling programs like a new Independent Lens film about a survivor from "Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan, Home, With Honor a documentary highlighting local Vietnam War veterans, and The Wall that Heals which shares touching tales surrounding the traveling Vietnam memorial replica. Salute to Service: A Veterans Day Celebration 

Join country music star Mickey Guyton for a heartfelt Veterans Day celebration honoring our nation's heroes with inspiring military stories and performances by Craig Morgan, Christian McBride, Aubrey Logan, and the U.S. Army Field Band.

Make Peace or Die: Honor the Fallen

Riddled with survivor's guilt after his unit lost 17 men during "Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan, Marine veteran Anthony Marquez makes it his mission to reconnect with the Gold Star families of the fallen. By carving and hand-delivering a battlefield cross for each of the families affected by loss, Anthony finds the path to heal himself.

The Wall That Heals 

Hear the stories of seven North Carolinians who served in the Vietnam War. 1,612 people from the state died in the conflict, including the youngest U.S. serviceman to die in the war and one of the eight women. Thousands of Vietnam veterans with post-trauma stress or other disabilities find relief at “The Wall That Heals,” a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Home, With Honor 

This documentary explores one North Carolina's community's efforts to honor its Vietnam War veterans. The town of Garner invited “The Wall That Heals” to remember those who died in Vietnam, to honor those who went to Vietnam, and to educate people about the sacrifices made by our Vietnam War veterans.

Wilmington, Our First WWII Heritage City 

Wilmington, North Carolina, proudly holds the title of the first WWII Heritage City in the U.S. During and after World War II, many cities around the world were profoundly affected by the war, and some have preserved or commemorated their wartime history as part of their cultural heritage. Wilmington's restored USO facility and historical sites, like Fort Fisher and the Battleship North Carolina, offer visitors a chance to delve into the rich history of World War II. The city's commitment to preserving this heritage is a tribute to the sacrifices made during the war and provides a unique opportunity to honor and learn from this pivotal period in American history.

American Veteran: Keep it Close explores the significance of objects that veterans carried with them or brought back home from their service. Hosted by Shain Brenden, a former medic in the US Navy who served multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Marines, the series asks what these objects meant, and why they still matter today.

Veterans Coming Home 

A team of photographers, writers, and filmmakers, both veteran and civilian, crisscross the country to explore the lives of post-9/11 veterans, the divide between them and their communities, and the stereotypes that veterans and civilians hold about each other. They ask: Why does this divide exist? How does it affect communities across the country? And why does it matter?
